Unveiling the Deception: An In-Depth Book Review of 'God, Greed, and the (Prosperity) Gospel'

Updated: Mar 18, 2024

What comes to mind when you envision the word "prosperity?" Maybe it's an abundance of wealth. Or perhaps the realization of one's dreams or aspirations. That's what the "prosperity gospel" claims to offer. Costi Hinn, the nephew of televangelist Benny Hinn, is too familiar with it. Enjoying an opulent existence before leaving it all behind for the true gospel, authoring the book "God, Greed, and the (Prosperity) Gospel: How Truth Overwhelms a Life Built on Lies," discussing the inner sanctum of the Hinn family.
From the book, I learned the importance of biblical contentment (Philippians 4:11). The author described his extravagant lifestyle, which was quite fascinating. He used to travel in private jets, drive expensive cars, live in mansions, stay in luxurious hotels, and dine at fancy restaurants. However, the true gospel emphasizes that ultimate satisfaction comes from Jesus, not worldly riches or pleasures.
Costi's presentation is well-organized and descriptive. Costi was very vulnerable regarding personal obstacles he has had to overcome, which I find very courageous. The book is also very informative on the historical origins of the prosperity gospel.
However, I would have preferred more direct Bible verse references when making biblical arguments. Costi also doesn't write the book in the format of listing and refuting different objections, but more his personal experience in the movement and his turning point in life. That said, I did not notice a lot of weaknesses.
Overall, I had a great time reading the book. I recommend reading it from start to finish and listening to Costi's sermons.
