Challenging Traditional Beliefs: "The Deconstruction of Christianity" Book Review

Updated: Aug 9, 2024

Have you ever heard of the term "deconstruction"? It is a concept that is becoming increasingly prevalent in the Church and has different meanings for different people. "The Deconstruction of Christianity" by Alisa Childers and Tim Barnett is a book that explains what it is and how to respond.
I had heard of the term "deconstruction" before reading the book. I came across the story of Joshua Harris, a famous Christian author who wrote a book titled "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" in 1997. Later, he renounced his faith in Christ. "The Deconstruction of Christianity" helped clarify the ambiguity surrounding "deconstruction" and its associated movement. It was a refreshing read that provided an in-depth explanation of the concept.
Throughout the book, Alisa Childers and Tim Barnett cite Scripture in great detail to support their responses to deconstructionist objections and rhetoric. The authors explain the historical origins of the deconstruction word and movement, which I didn't know about before reading the book. Give relatable scenarios to showcase how we, as Christians, should respond to those going through a deconstruction in a loving but uncompromising way. However, some definitions of different politico-religious terms included attributes I disagreed with.
The book "The Deconstruction of Christianity" is a must-read for pastors and those wanting to know how the Church should address the issue.
